Interstate Container Helps Mountaire Farms Distribute Thousands of Thanksgiving Meals

Interstate Resources News homepage: http://news.interstateresources.com

As Thanksgiving approaches, Interstate Container once again joins long-time partner, Mountaire Farms, to spread the holiday spirit with the 19th Annual ‘Thanksgiving for Thousands’ food drive. Interstate Container will assist Mountaire Farms in packing and distributing Thanksgiving meals to over 50,000 Delmarva residents. This year, the food drive will also provide meals to 2,200 residents in North Carolina (NC).

Community spirit is the foundation of Mountaire’s Thanksgiving for Thousands program, which brings together hundreds of volunteers, including employees from Mountaire and Interstate Container, working hand-in-hand to pack over 10,000 dinner boxes in time for the Thanksgiving holiday. In addition to Selbyville, DE, this year volunteers also gathered in Lumber Bridge, NC, cultivating lasting partnerships among residents, companies, and other contributors in Delmarva and North Carolina.

Each Thanksgiving box to be distributed will include all of the necessary ingredients to cook a nutritious holiday dinner for up to six people. These ingredients include a Mountaire roaster, corn, string beans, pork and beans, yams, stuffing mix, gravy, cranberry sauce and brownie mix.

During Thanksgiving week, dinner boxes will be distributed to food pantries, governmental agencies, churches, and shut-ins.

Interstate Container plants in Cambridge, MD and Reading, PA worked closely with suppliers Mark/Trece, Inc. and Stafford Cutting Dies, Inc. to produce and donate the 15,000 corrugated boxes needed for this food drive, as well as other Mountaire initiatives throughout the year.

Interstate Container Exhibits High-Performance Greencoat® Wax-Free Boxes at PMA Fresh Summit 2013

Interstate Resources News homepage: http://news.interstateresources.com

Learn about strong, cost-efficient, and eco-friendly Greencoat® corrugated boxes at the Interstate Container booth # 447 during PMA Fresh Summit 2013, October 19-20, 2013 in New Orleans, LA.

For growers and packers, protecting fragile fruits and vegetables during shipment is critical to providing their customers with the high-quality, damage-free produce they expect. At PMA Fresh Summit 2013, Interstate Container will exhibit, at booth # 447, strong, water-resistant Greencoat wax-free boxes that effectively pack, protect, and transport fresh produce.

During the event, farmers and packers can experience Greencoat® performance first-hand, as well as schedule
side-by-side trials  with their current packaging. Interstate Container representatives will meet with key decision makers in the fresh produce industry and discuss how Greencoat® boxes offer significant savings, stronger and safer packaging, and a reduced carbon footprint.

Greencoat® Box Performance

Following five years of focused R&D and on-going customer trials, Interstate Container developed FBA-certified Greencoat® wax-free boxes which are 10% stronger than the competition, and offer suppliers a customized packaging solution that also reduces retailer costs.

With tested performance, Greencoat® boxes withstand exposure to moisture, shifts in temperature, and rough handling while effectively safeguarding fragile products. The water-resistant corrugated box offers a durable packaging solution that is perfect for long transportation and storage. Greencoat® boxes pack fresh produce, seafood, poultry, floral and stone products.

Greencoat® Box Cost Savings

Interstate Container assigns experienced produce packaging experts to work with customers to develop customized packaging that builds strength while decreasing costs. This process helps reduce unnecessary material use and waste. Greencoat® boxes are also easier and less costly to glue than traditional cascaded and curtain coated wax boxes.

Due to recyclability, Greencoat® wax-free boxes offer retailers cost savings by cutting landfill disposal fees, typically ranging from $65-$125 / ton (tipping fees & pull).

Patriot Pickle Shifts to Greencoat® Boxes by Interstate Container

Interstate Resources News homepage: http://news.interstateresources.com

Patriot Pickle, the Wayne, New Jersey-based manufacturer of fresh barrel-cured pickles, has replaced its secondary packaging with eco-friendly Greencoat® wax-free boxes by Interstate Container to transport and brand its “All American Pickle” products.

During processing, hot-to-cold temperature shifts result in moisture and condensation which compromise the integrity of corrugated packaging. This manufacturing environment presents Patriot Pickle with the challenge of utilizing the right box, one that offers necessary strength, water-resistance, and graphic appeal.

Interstate Container plants in Brunswick, NJ and Cambridge, MD collaborated to develop Greencoat® boxes specific to Patriot Pickle’s packaging structure, paper combination, and coating requirements.

Richard Loos, Interstate Container Brunswick Sales Representative, highlights:

“We quickly identified and solved this difficult and costly problem for the customer. Within two weeks of our first meeting, 200 samples of Greencoat® boxes were developed and shipped for testing.”

Within six weeks of the first meeting with Interstate Container, Patriot Pickle began shipping its pickles in Greencoat® wax-free boxes.

The new Greencoat® wax-free boxes feature four main improvements to traditional wax boxes: increased strength, enhanced branding, cost effectiveness, and sustainability.

A Stronger Box

Although wax-free, Greencoat® boxes are 10% stronger than traditional wax-coated boxes and withstand moisture, shifts from hot-to-cold temperatures, and rough handling.

A Printed Box with Improved Branding

Without increasing the price, Interstate Container offered Patriot Pickle improved branding with a new 3-color box, as opposed to a 1-color box, featuring the company’s signature green pickle and the addition of the US flag for this ‘All American Pickle’ brand.

A Cost-Effective Box

Interstate Container reduced the overall cost of the box by decreasing the coating by 35% and light-weighting from double-wall to single-wall board.

Further, because Greencoat® boxes are wax-free and fully recyclable, customers do not have to pay costly wax disposal and landfill costs.

A Sustainable Box
Greencoat® is a Fibreboard Association (FBA)-certified wax-free packaging solution. One hundred per cent (100%) recyclable, repulpable, and compostable, it meets Patriot Pickle’s functional packaging requirements, while reducing costs.

Satisfied with their new packaging, Patriot Pickle transferred 100% of their packaging needs to Interstate Container.

Loos explains,

"By effectively identifying the Patriot Pickle's problem, we utilized our expertise and unique capabilities to find the right solution. We saved the customer money and offered them a stronger and more attractive package.
To date, we have successfully shipped roughly 200,000 boxes.”

Due to the success of the project and customer satisfaction, Patriot Pickle and Interstate Container will partner for an upcoming product development project.

Interstate Container to Launch Greencoat® ICE Seafood Boxes at PACK EXPO 2013

Interstate Resources News homepage: http://news.interstateresources.com

At PACK EXPO 2013, Interstate Container will unveil Greencoat® ICE wax-free corrugated boxes tailored to effectively pack and transport seafood products on ice.

During the event, Interstate Container will display the first wax-free recyclable box for ice packed seafood at booth # S6338 from September 23-25 at Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Greencoat® ICE seafood boxes
offer the necessary strength and durability to pack seafood and ice, while reducing the carbon footprint and eliminating expensive wax disposal costs for retailers and restaurants. Interstate Container representatives will be available at the booth to discuss Greencoat® boxes and schedule trials.

Greencoat® ICE for Seafood Packaging

Interstate Container partnered with Global Green USA's Coalition for Resource Recovery (CoRR) and leading seafood processors to successfully develop and trial Greencoat® ICE . The wax-free box can withstand frozen seafood packaging processes, while maintaining its structural and functional integrity.

Unlike the typically used paraffin wax-coated box and Styrofoam, Greencoat® boxes are Fibre Box Association (FBA)-certified as 100% recyclable and repulpable in line with the relative protocol for wax-alternative coatings.  Greencoat® boxes can withstand long transportation and rough handling, where Styrofoam and plastic could easily crack or break.

With this step towards sustainable packaging, retailers and restaurants could realize a cost-saving of up to $200 Million nationwide and reduction of 1.45 million tons of solid waste generated from waxed boxes. [1]
