Interstate Container Showcases a Strong & Cost Saving Alternative to Wax Packaging at SE Regional Fruit & Vegetable Conference 2015

Interstate Resources News homepage: http://news.interstateresources.com

Interstate Container, US-based corrugated packaging manufacturer, to exhibit a strong, sustainable and cost saving alternative to wax packaging for produce retailers and growers, at Southeast Regional Fruit and Vegetable Conference 2015.

During Southeast Regional Fruit and Vegetable Conference 2015 (SERFVC), Interstate Container will display wax-free, water-resistant, coated Greencoat® boxes at Booth # 435/437 from January 9 – 10, 2015 at the Savannah International Trade and Convention Center in Savannah, GA. Farmers, packers, and other visitors can meet with Interstate Container packaging experts at Booth # 435/437 to discuss the cost-efficient sustainable box and schedule side-by-side trials with their current packaging.

Greencoat® boxes offer growers and packers a coated, wax-free box to pack, protect and effectively deliver fragile fruits and vegetables, such as cabbage, cucumbers, eggplant, peaches, peppers, squash, tomatoes, and yams, in addition to seedlings.

Greencoat® Box Strength & Sustainability

Interstate Container invested 5 years of R&D and customer trials to develop customizable Greencoat® wax-free boxes. The manufacturer continuously launches trials to test the water-resistant box’s performance under the most severe shipping conditions. Greencoat® boxes are 10% stronger than traditional wax coated boxes.

With tested performance, FBA-certified Greencoat® wax-free coated boxes withstand cold and damp conditions and rough handling, offering a durable packaging solution for long transportation, storage, and field and shed packing.  Interstate Container ensures that all produce boxes feature A-flute single-wall, providing greater compression strength.

Greencoat® Box Cost Efficiency

Greencoat® boxes provide significant savings to both the retailer and grower by ending costly wax cascaded carton disposal fees ranging from $65-$125 / ton (tipping fees & pull) while protecting fresh fruits and vegetables like traditional wax coated boxes. Interstate Container also appoints experienced produce packaging experts to work with customers to develop customized packaging, build strength, and decrease box costs by reducing unnecessary material use and waste.

Anne Vogul, Assistant Manager Retail Operations, stated during the Save-A-Lot-Trial, “These boxes are great for us on many levels. They take waste out of our waste room which allows us to reduce dumpster size. We also get to recycle the boxes which add a little bit of additional revenue for us. And in many cases these boxes can be cheaper than the present wax box that we are paying for so it is a win, win, win for everybody!”

Interstate Container Reading Assists KGD Architecture with 9-Foot Jayson Werth Gnome for ‘Canstruction’ Contest

Interstate Resources News homepage: http://news.interstateresources.com

Interstate Container Reading helps Kishimoto/Gordon/Dalaya PC (KGD) Architecture participate in Arlington’s annual Canstruction competition to donate food to local hunger relief groups.

In line with corporate philosophy ‘What is good for the community, is good for the company’, Interstate Container Reading helped KGD Architecture contribute to the Arlington Food Assistance Center’s annual ‘Canstruction’ contest on 14 November 2014. Interstate Container Reading, a corrugated packaging manufacturing plant, supplied KGD Architecture with the corrugated sheets needed to build a 9-foot homage made of seafood cans.

With the closing of the season and the Nats playoffs approaching, KGD Architecture decided to design and set-up a replica of Jayson Werth, an American Major League Baseball outfielder for the Washington Nationals, in order to bring attention to a good cause. The architectural company selected Interstate Container Reading to provide, separate, and cut-out corrugated layers with special shapes to support the food cans consistent with their design.

One week after receiving the CAD designs, Interstate Container Reading delivered the sheets, executing the given designs precisely. The corrugated packaging manufacturer worked fast to deliver the sliced corrugated sheets to provide KGD Architecture gnome team sufficient time to build and test. Interstate Container Reading also organized the layers of corrugated sheets by numbers, making it easier for the team of 10 to set-up the gnome at Reagan National Airport using 2,263 cans ($3,800 worth) of seafood.

Although they did not win, KGD Architecture raised $7,000 for the project and donated the unused funds to the Arlington Food Assistance Center.

Learn more about KGD Architecture’s participation: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/dc-sports-bog/wp/2014/11/18/nats-fans-make-9-foot-homage-to-jayson-werth-out-of-3800-worth-of-canned-seafood/

About Canstruction Campaign

Canstruction is a social campaign by the Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC) to raise awareness and collect food for hunger relief groups. AFAC holds Canstruction competitions in approximately 150 cities in the US. Participants are required to design and construct large sculptures using full cans of food, which will be donated to local hunger relief groups after the events are over.

Greencoat® Wax-Free Boxes at PACK EXPO International 2014: A Huge Step in the Right Direction

Interstate Resources News homepage: http://news.interstateresources.com

Interstate Container is showcasing Greencoat®, its wax-free, strong, and eco-friendly corrugated boxes at Booth # N- 5883 during PACK EXPO International 2014.

During PACK EXPO International 2014, Interstate Container will demonstrate the strength and water resistance of their pioneering Greencoat® wax-free boxes. Exhibition attendees can get to know the #ElephantintheRoom and experience what makes Greencoat® an innovative and revolutionary sustainable packaging solution.

Interstate Container’s 100% recyclable Greencoat® corrugated boxes offer clients moisture-resistance, strength, and cost-effectiveness, while reducing the carbon footprint for both customers and end-users.

Proven Sustainability. Greencoat® wax-free boxes are FBA-certified 100% recyclable, repulpable, and compostable. The eco-friendly box reduces environmentally-harmful greenhouse gas emissions generated from burning unrecyclable corrugated packaging.
According to Global Green USA Coalition for Resource Recovery (CoRR), fresh produce, meats and seafood producers generate 1.45 million tons of solid waste from paraffin-coated cardboard alone. Thus, an industry shift to recyclable corrugated packaging could reduce America's annual carbon emissions by 4.5 million mtCO2e.

Mountaire Farms, operating the largest poultry processing facility in North America, reduced 150,000 mtCO2/annually since shifting nearly 100% of its 500 million square feet of boxes to Greencoat®.

Tested Strength & Water Resistance. Greencoat® boxes are moisture-resistant, temperature-resistant, and strong enough to pack and transport poultry, seafood, meat, fresh produce, as well as other refrigerated and frozen products. This recyclable box can endure shifts from cold-to-hot, rough handling, long trips, as well as transport iced products without sacrificing strength or performance.

During trials with NAFCO, the largest regional seafood distributor in the Mid-Atlantic, Greencoat boxes successfully transported iced Chesapeake Bay seafood across 500 miles. Additionally, Mountaire Farms transitioned nearly 100% from waxed boxes to Greencoat® wax-free boxes, and currently ships over 2 million Greencoat® boxes filled with poultry every month.

Demonstrated Cost-Effectiveness. By using Greencoat® boxes, the retail industry and restaurant sector will cut or avoid landfill disposal costs ranging from $65-$125 / ton (tipping fees & pull). ‘Retailers and restaurants could realize a net benefit of combined cost savings and revenue generation of $200 million nationwide’ – Global Green USA CoRR.
Interstate Container also assigns expert engineers to work with customers to develop “right size” customized packaging that builds strength while reducing costs.

Monte Package Company Highlights Greencoat® in Produce News

Interstate Resources News homepage: http://news.interstateresources.com

Monte Package Company presented benefits of Greencoat® boxes in an article published on Produce News magazine.

Monte Package Offers Something Old and Something New

by Tad Thompson | June 04, 2014
Sourced from: http://www.theproducenews.com/news-dep-menu/test-featured/13188-monte-package-offers-something-old-and-something-new

RIVERSIDE, MI — Four generations later, Monte Package Co. has a revitalized business in selling veneer baskets like those on display in the firm’s Riverside packaging museum.

Sam Monte, director of operations for the firm, said his great-grandparents, Anthony and Rose Monte, launched the business in 1925 by selling veneer baskets to southwest Michigan’s countless fruit and vegetable growers.

Monte Package now offers a full-service produce packaging line, including the latest technology. In the Monte Package board room, Sam Monte, the firm’s director of operations, and Mary Morphey, the firm’s marketing intern, hold the very popular grab-n-go display bags and show samples of ‘Greencoat’ brand corrugated boxes that replaced waxed boxes. But still, proving that life moves in cycles, the interest in locally grown and traditional farming has re-invigorated the demand for baskets resembling those commonly used 90 years ago.

The designs of some baskets — like those used by some Michigan grape growers — are virtually unchanged in 90 years. Otherwise, consumers want to buy produce that “looks farm-fresh on the shelves,” said Monte. “They like the look that it was picked yesterday.” Much of the packaging “has new-school features and we try to make it look like baskets of the 1920s.”

At the same time, Monte Package is offering a wide variety of permutations on the grab-n-go shelf-display, clear, zipper-closure display bag, which is perforated to allow produce to breathe.

“It’s something safe, protected and ventilated for moisture control,” said Monte.

Perforations can be customized to maximize shelf life of particular items. “People love them on shelves,” he added. “The industry universally is using them, from growers to packers to wholesalers and mom-and-pop stores or for farm markets.” Major national retailers, of course, are also using these bags.

Two years ago, Monte started offering the “Greencoat” brand of packaging to replace waxed corrugated boxes. Monte said these water-resistant boxes are 100 percent recyclable and repulpable. They are strong for field or shed packing, eliminate waxed-box disposal fees and promote environmental and sustainability efforts.

The company’s website offers hundreds of items related to produce packaging and merchandising.

Sam Monte’s grandparents, Salvatore (Sam) and Connie Monte, took over the business about 1960. Sam Monte’s father, Tony Monte, took over the business 30 years ago and expanded to corrugated packaging. Tony’s brother, John Monte, moved to Florida when the firm opened two distribution centers there.

Sam and Tony Monte are both graduates of the University of Miami-Ohio. They have extended their company’s reach to the Midwest, including Ohio, Illinois and Indiana.

The firm also has customers in distant points such as New Jersey, Florida and Texas. It is developing the California market as well.
