Interstate Launches GREENCOAT® Website for Sustainable Packaging Buyers

Interstate Resources News homepage: http://news.interstateresources.com

GREENCOATâ website (www.greencoat.net) makes requesting information and samples of wax-alternative corrugated boxes easy for packaging buyers in the poultry, meat, seafood, fresh produce, floral, and landscaping industries.

Interstate Container has released a website for GREENCOATâ wax-free boxes, a corrugated packaging solution for companies in need of strong and sustainable moisture-resistant corrugated packaging. Interstate Container Cambridge and Interstate Container Columbia ship over 3.2 million wax-alternative boxes each month. The boxes are compostable and FBA-certified 100% recyclable and repulpable.

From the website, visitors can call or submit a quick form to request GREENCOATâ samples to run in side-by-side trials with their current packaging. The website also offers PDF downloads, links to upcoming trade shows and to social media channels.

About GREENCOATâ Wax-Replacement Boxes

GREENCOATâ boxes provide the same strength than traditional cascaded wax boxes and curtain coated wax boxes. They withstand high exposure to moisture, rough handling, long storage, transportation, and shifts from cold-to-hot environmental conditions. GREENCOATâ boxes are also easier to glue than waxed boxes.

Interstate Container controls 100% of GREENCOATâ’s manufacturing process; the company does not outsource the coating of paper to third parties, which increases cost effectiveness. Likewise, customers experience cost savings, when they no longer have to pay landfill disposal fees.

Interstate Container Cambridge invested 5 years of R&D to develop and successfully trial GREENCOATâ wax-alternative boxes with leading poultry processor, Mountaire Farms. GREENCOATâ has reduced an estimated 100,000 tons of greenhouse gases for Mountaire Farms, lowered costs and streamlined Mountaire Farm’s supply chain.

Award-Winning & Socially Conscious Corrugated Packaging

Interstate Container has received awards for GREENCOATâ and for its contributions to its local communities. Dorchester Chamber of Commerce named Interstate Container Cambridge 2011 Large Chamber Business of the Year for its good standing with obligations and active support of the community and chamber activities.

At the 11th Annual Sustainable Design Awards, Global Green, a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering global climate improvement, awarded 1st Pioneer Award to Interstate Container for its advancements with GREENCOATâ

Mountaire Farms and WMDT, ABC-affiliated television station in Salisbury, MD, named Interstate Container Cambridge as the recipient of the WMDT/Mountaire Farms Environmental Star of the Month Award for July 2010.

On Friday, 29 October, Interstate Container Cambridge members celebrated their achievement of contributing $35,000 to 2010 United Way Campaign. Employees wore black ‘Live United’ shirts demonstrating the corrugated packaging manufacturer’s support of United Way. United Way board members joined in the celebration.

‘Live United’ Campaign

For the past three consecutive years, Interstate Container Cambridge has held an employee campaign to raise funds for United Way. This campaign allows employees to contribute funds to the cause through payroll deductions, one-time donations, or donations billed to a credit card over a period of one year.

United Way, a non-profit organization, focuses on improving the quality of life and directs efforts and donations into the three main building blocks of a good life: education, health, and income. The organization also engages in disaster recovery, including the ongoing program along the Gulf
Coast since the devastating hurricanes of 2005.

Pete Bugas, Interstate Container Cambridge General Manager, states,

"I'm extremely proud of the employees and the way they've stepped up and contributed, the employees are the ones that made this happen. I'm extremely thankful for what they've done."

The mural, painted by Rosato, on Cambridge office premises, expressed through art Interstate Container Cambridge’s commitment to ‘Live United’. It depicted the essence of the manufacturer’s dedication to supporting the community and proactively protecting the environment through eco-friendly initiatives.

New Recyclable Poultry Packaging from Interstate Container Cambridge Packs a Climate Punch

Interstate Resources News homepage: http://news.interstateresources.com
Source: Global Green, New Recyclabe Poultry Packaging Packs a Powerful Climate Punch; Saves Money & Resources

Global Green USA, Mountaire Farms, and Interstate Container announced completion of the conversion of the largest poultry plant in the US to recyclable, wax-alternative boxes, thereby reducing costs and environmental impact, and assisting its customers in cost-effectively meeting their environmental goals.

At the International Poultry Expo, Global Green USA applauded Mountaire Farms and Interstate Container for their pioneering roles in reducing the environmental impact of wholesale transfer packaging as this innovation has the potential to influence the design of transfer packaging for all types of poultry, meat, produce and seafood delivered to grocers and restaurants throughout the world. Global Green also called on the food packaging industry to convert to this newly achievable green standard.

In March 2009, Interstate and Mountaire Farms announced its plans to conduct trials of recyclable modified atmosphere packaging through Hunt’s Point, the world’s largest food distribution center, as part of Global Green’s Coalition for Resource Recovery’s initiative to achieve 100% recyclable wholesale transfer packaging through the facility. Trials began pallet by pallet through Hunt’s Point’s harsh conditions and progressed to the truck load, and finally a two week test where Mountaire product shipped solely in the Fibre Box Association (FBA)-Certified recyclable boxes.

Upon successful completion of the pilot in September 2009, Mountaire announced its plan to not only convert its existing modified atmosphere packaging to recyclable boxes but also to convert its ice packed product to modified atmosphere packaging to allow for a full transition of its entire product line to recyclable boxes. The full conversion of Mountaire’s first facility and the largest poultry plant in the US, located in Lumber Bridge, NC, was completed in January.

According to Interstate Container’s National Account Manager, Pete Bugas,

“This is a first truly significant step towards replacing high-performance wax boxes throughout the difficult fresh food distribution channels. These boxes must withstand an extremely wet and challenging environment. Meeting the protocol criteria set forth by the FBA is a crucial step, and satisfying the rigors of the distribution channel in New York City is equally as tough. Ultimately, this fiber can now be recaptured instead of heading to a landfill where wax boxes are discarded. Interstate’s continuous environmental stewardship efforts remain a key part of our corporation’s DNA.”
The switch to FBA-certified recyclable packaging is only one component of the sustainable packaging transition. The switch in packaging methods from ice packed poultry to modified atmosphere packaging will result in significant water and energy savings. The box size was reduced, all wax was eliminated from the box, reducing the use of corrugated and petroleum products. If all of the newly designed boxes were recycled, the greenhouse gas benefit from source reduction and recycling the boxes would be 100,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually. In addition, the switch from ice-packed poultry to modified atmosphere packaging is estimated to save millions of gallons of water annually. Combined these innovations also improve efficiency, streamline operations, and provide a safer work environment.

According to Larry Saywell, Mountaire Farms’ VP of Marketing and Sales, “Mountaire Farms is an agricultural company, and we are heavily dependent upon the earth’s natural resources for the continued success of our business. This project maintains and conserves these natural resources and is consistent with our company’s ‘way of being’. We fully recognize the positive impact of this project’s success on the futures of our people, our farmers, our suppliers, our community and our business.”

It is estimated that 1.5 million tons of un-recyclable wax-coated corrugated boxes are discarded in the U.S. each year. If coated corrugated boxes were designed for recycling and recycled, a greenhouse gas savings of 5 million mtCO2e, equivalent to removing from one million passenger vehicles from the road, would be realized, and U.S. grocers and restaurateurs could save $63M annually in avoided disposal fees.

"To be competitive in today's world economy, our goal must be the sustainable use of materials," said Matt Hale, director of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Resource Conservation and Recovery. "Producing materials that can be recovered and reused at end of life helps us achieve this goal."

According to Annie White, Director of Global Green USA’s Coalition for Resource Recovery, “Converting to transfer packaging certified as recyclable by the Fibre Box Association, is a readily achievable step that industry and businesses can take to improve their environmental performance, enhance their service to customers, and improve their bottom line.

Through dedication and perseverance, Interstate Container and Mountaire developed a cost-effective, high-performing offering that enhances service to its customers. Global Green calls on others in the poultry, meat, produce, and seafood industries, to develop solutions for all food and packaging types, rapidly accelerating their use.”

Global Green USA’s sentiments were echoed in a statement provided by Chris Moyer, manager of the National Restaurant Association's Conserve program,

“The delivery of poultry, seafood, and produce in recyclable boxes helps divert potentially reusable materials from landfills. High performing, cost competitive recyclable boxes also provide another way restaurateurs can improve their bottom line and meet environmental goals, which is what we advocate through our Conserve initiative. We encourage the use of packaging made of recycled materials and similar innovations that assist restaurants in greening their operations.”
Global Green USA’s Coalition for Resource Recovery is an industry working dedicated to generating business value through transforming waste into assets. Founded in 1993 by activist and philanthropist Diane Meyer Simon, Global Green is the American Arm of Green Cross International (GCI), created by President Mikhail S. Gorbachev to foster a global value shift toward a sustainable and secure future by reconnecting humanity with the environment.

[1] Greenhouse gas savings calculated using EPA’s WARM tool. Saving assumes 100% of the boxes generated are recycled.
[1] According to the U.S. EPA 2007 MSW Facts and Figures, 31 million tons of OCC is discarded each year. The Fibre Box Association estimates that 5% of OCC is wax coated. EPA WARM Tool and Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies Calculator were used to calculate potential greenhouse gas savings. National restaurateur and grocers savings are based on a national average tipping fee of $42.08 based on the 2006 data in BioCycle’s State of Garbage report.

Interstate Container Cambridge and Prestage Foods: Finding the Right Fit

Interstate Resources News homepage: http://news.interstateresources.com

Source: Interstate News, Summer 2007

Prestage Foods LLC, in St. Pauls, North Carolina, supplies fresh and frozen turkey products to retail and institutional U.S.markets. Interstate Container - Cambridge’s experience running boxes for the poultry and produce industries as well as our design capabilities have helped to create a mutually beneficial partnership with them.

Our relationship with Prestage Foods began almost one year ago when we made our initial visit to their processing plant. Initial meetings uncovered the need for a frozen parts box that would perform under very cold humid conditions and also stack upon a pallet better. Prestage was using an automatic set up clamshell design that absorbed moisture easily and simply collapsed after only a few minutes in their cooler.

Our team at the Cambridge facility analyzed the package and determined that a different design would perform better than the current package. After we presented samples to the Prestage team and explained the benefit of our proposed design, we received the go ahead to begin producing boxes. The benefits of the new design were seen almost immediately.

Boxes held up in the stack off area and in the cooler. Returns due to failed boxes dropped dramatically. Packing personnel commented on how much easier the boxes were to handle and fill. Third party cold storage personnel said that we had helped to make their jobs easier since they did not have to repack failing boxes.

All in all, we had an excellent success story here. In order to solidify the relationship and earn additional business, we decided to propose a layer footprint that would cube pallets and trailers more efficiently. Once we had the correct dimensions, we submitted another set of samples to Prestage. They quickly approved the new layer design, and we began producing the new box. The results were very rewarding.

According to Ken Braswell, General Manager of Prestage, we have pulled close to $75 K per year out of their packing and shipping operation costs. Boxes are performing better than ever with more boxes on each layer helping to hold the entire pallet together.

In fact the boxes are performing to the point that Prestage has been able to increase the number of boxes per pallet. In short, we have a very happy customer who is working with us to increase our presence at their facility and to help open doors with other processors in the region.

The Interstate Container Cambridge (ICI) team recently ran its first pre-print order. Using ICI’s Cut-To-Mark capabilities, the test was a success and finished samples were presented to our largest customer, Mountaire Farms.

This capability will allow ICI to offer waxed packaging options not currently available to the poultry market. It will also allow us to offer innovative packing to other potential customers. This project was a joint effort between ICI, the ICR graphics team and INDEVCO’s Saudi Arabia printing operation.
