Interstate Resources has published a series of PDF files about the U.S. corrugated manufacturing group's sustainability efforts. Download this story at:http://www.interstateresources.com/PDF/Interstate-Resources-Sustainable-Forestry.pdf

Challenge:

Newport Timber and RB Lumber needed to address a number of business demands on several key fronts. Ensuring company profitability, pursuing environmental sensitivity, while maintaining excellent customer service and products were the challenges facing Interstate Resources.

Solution:

Building on the flexibility of private ownership, Interstate Resources has developed and instituted a multi-tiered approach for environmental, economic and service success.

The world’s renewable resources are universally regarded as precious and worth protecting. Newport Timber and RB Lumber take these responsibilities very seriously and continuously look for ways to improve its limited, minimal impact on the environment.

Practicing good sustainable forestry methods for years, Newport Timber operates within the Sustainable Forestry Initiative Inc. (SFI) guidelines. Their carbon footprint is reduced when using every part of the tree in the process, producing a product or energy. Consequently, the client’s carbon footprint is also reduced when working with Newport Timber and RB Lumber

Environmental efforts include:

• Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) certified

• Charter member of SFI Georgia State Implementation Committee with continued support

• Meeting or exceeding American Lumber Standards guidelines

• Logger certification: All loggers are trained in the Georgia Master Timber Harvester Program

• Utilizing wood chips, bark and sawdust as biomass boiler fuel at Interstate Paper for steam and cogeneration of electricity

• Supplying Interstate Paper with all of their virgin fiber: 90% of chips are manufactured on site, 10% purchased as residuals from other sawmills

Newport Timber and RB Lumber’s private ownership has been instrumental with best management practices (BMPs), investments, speed of decisions, flexibility and long-term goals.

Products include pine saw wood for pressure treated lumber and wood chips. Customer service has been expanded to include Just-in-Time inventory.

You can count on their service, products and attention to detail…as always, their target is zero customer complaints.

Sustainability at Interstate Resources: Interstate Paper - Sustainable Wastewater Treatment

Interstate Resources News homepage: http://news.interstateresources.com

Interstate Resources has published a series of PDF files about the U.S. corrugated manufacturing group's sustainability efforts. Download this story at:http://www.interstateresources.com/Sustainable-Wastewater-Treatment.html

Challenge:
Interstate Paper’s treatment of its wastewater was based on an end-of-pipe system that was built back in the 1960s as part of the mill’s initial infrastructure. Interstate Paper needed to find a way to sustain its wastewater treatment to meet the company’s current and projected growth and maintain its stewardship to the environment and the State of Georgia’s natural resources.

Seeking to control its treated wastewater discharges into the North Newport River, the company managers positioned their mill for holistically sustainable wastewater treatment that permits the company to grow its operations in Georgia where water remains a precious natural resource.

Solution:
Investing significant time, research, and money, Interstate Paper instituted an environmental approach that transformed the mill and ensured opportunities for growth. The strategy combines the application of existing theories and the adaptation of emerging technologies to sustain increased production demands at the mill.

• The Interstate Paper team restored and upgraded current infrastructure, including the 800-acre wastewater treatment system. The upgrade uses standard wastewater treatment technologies and methods such as facultative lagoons and plug-flow kinetics, while also including new technologies such as solar-powered basin mixers.

• They expanded best management practices. The mill implemented operational modifications that target and reduce wastewater flows and regulated pollutants at the source while improving overall processes for water use reduction and recycling. Water conservation was given priority.

• Contractors used sustainable construction methods such as using recycled concrete and local soils during the restoration and upgrade of the 800-acre lagoon system.

• The mill developed a practical long-term sludge management plan and replaced the 40 year-old sludge lagooning system by diverting 10% of the mill’s discharge flow (more than 95% of the generated solids) away from the wastewater treatment system for burning in the mill’s biofuel boiler. Interstate Paper is now ranked highly in the nation among paper mills in the quality of its effluent discharge.

The mill’s wastewater treatment facility is a thriving plant, animal, and aquatic eco-system and has been cited for the high density of waterfowl and both resident and migratory birds. Large concentrations of shrimp, fish, alligators, and indigenous birds are found in the immediate vicinity of the mill’s outfall.

Through innovative actions, Interstate Paper’s discharge remains one of the lowest in North America, meeting or exceeding all federal, state, and local standards.

Sustainability at Interstate Resources: GREENCOAT™. . .Strength and Sustainability

Interstate Resources News homepage: http://news.interstateresources.com

Interstate Resources has published a series of PDF files about the U.S. corrugated manufacturing group's sustainability efforts. Download this story at: http://www.interstateresources.com/PDF/Interstate-Resources-Greencoat-Strength-Sustainability.pdf

Challenge:

How can a packaging supplier “green” their impact on the wholesale transfer packaging supply chain and make a positive impact on the environment? If there is a solution, how can the packaging supplier distinguish themselves from all other packaging suppliers?

Solution:

Packaging supplier Interstate Container Cambridge collaborated with major poultry processor Mountaire Farms to develop a patent pending, high-performance, wax replacement, recyclable box. This box has excellent meat release properties and, in tandem with a change from ice pack boxes to modified atmosphere packaging (MAP), has lowered costs, streamlined the supply chainand reduced an estimated 100,000 tons of greenhouse gases for Mountaire Farms. This is equivalent to a yearly savings of greenhouse gas emissions from 364,262 passenger vehicles.

Interstate Container Cambridge created GREENCOAT, a unique name that ideally portrays the application. GREENCOAT is environmentally sensitive in many ways. This brand is at the forefront of recyclable, greener packaging methods and initiatives.

Interstate Container Cambridge needed to positively represent their wax replacement brand to illustrate its strength, water resistance, sustainability, and characteristics. When you see an elephant holding an umbrella, think of Interstate Container Cambridge. The logo represents toughness and durability while also portraying smart water repellant technology and environmental sustainability.

Considerable capital and many years were devoted to researching and developing their new GREENCOAT process. This cost neutral wax replacement procedure meets or exceeds most waxed box performance and is recyclable, repulpable and compostable. Custom retailer possibilities are endless when packing poultry, produce, seafood and many other products.

So look for the GREENCOAT elephant holding an umbrella, the new standard in wax replacement packaging.

You and GREENCOAT, working in tandem to help preserve the future.

Sustainability at Interstate Resources: GREENCOAT™. . .No Wax Allowed

Interstate Resources News homepage: http://news.interstateresources.com

Interstate Resources has published a series of PDF files about the U.S. corrugated manufacturing group's sustainability efforts. Download this story at:
http://www.interstateresources.com/PDF/Interstate-Resources-Greencoat-No-Wax-Allowed.pdf

Challenge:

A box industry challenge was to provide a viable alternative for waxed boxes. Traditional paraffin waxed boxes are on a path to extinction due primarily to their inability to recycle. Consequently they end up in landfills (or are burned as fuel).

Since 2005, many leading retailers and grocers, including Wal-Mart and Albertsons, have been demanding an environmentally friendly alternative to wax coated boxes from their suppliers. In addition, New York City and other major metropolitan areas are also considering bans on waxed boxes.

The future is clear – wax replacement packaging of poultry, seafood, produce, frozen food and floral products will become a necessity. Moist environments create challenging conditions for any wax replacement box. Performance is critical, as is the price point.

Solution:

Interstate Container Cambridge did the improbable. They created GREENCOAT, a patent-pending wax replacement that is effective, sustainable, 100% recyclable and cost effective. GREENCOAT meets or exceeds many wax performance benchmarks while remaining totally environmentally friendly.

Global Green USA, a non-profit organization committed to addressing some of the greatest challenges facing humanity, praised the development in a recent press release. The announcement discussed Hunt’s Point, NY, the world’s largest food distribution center’s move from non-recyclable transfer packaging to recyclable packaging.

Unlike traditional wax boxes, GREENCOAT wax alternative:

  • Is 100% recyclable and repulpable

  • Meets or exceeds most current waxed box performance

  • Features state of the art high performance

  • Integrates multiple use applications

  • Provides proven moist condition tolerance

  • Is compostable

  • Immediately promotes environmental and sustainability efforts

  • Saves customers disposal fees

  • And is cost neutral

Additional benefits include reduced carbon footprints by eliminating pre-steps required for traditional wax coated or cascaded corrugated packaging, as well as by minimizing supply chain steps.

Let Interstate Container Cambridge work with your team to solve your custom ice pack and moist environment corrugated box needs.

Sustainability at Interstate Resources: Interstate Paper Achieves 78% Fossil Fuel Reduction

Interstate Resources News homepage: http://news.interstateresources.com/

Interstate Resources has published a series of PDF files about the U.S.corrugated manufacturing group's sustainability efforts. Download this story at
www.interstateresources.com/PDF/Interstate-Resources-Reduction-for-Fossil-Fuels.pdf.

Challenge

In order to serve the customer, support the community and protect natural resources, Interstate Paper needed to find a way to develop environmentally friendly energy, maximize efficiencies and still produce a competitive product.

Solution

Interstate Paper has been improving their sustainable efforts for years. They’ve consistently reached past the “good enough” benchmark by constantly re-evaluating and adjusting their environmental focus and initiatives. These ongoing endeavors consist of maximizing current infrastructure and resources, investing in continuous improvements, and committing to future modifications.

Here’s a quick snapshot of successful initiatives toward safeguarding the environment:

Investments

  • Late 2003, Install Bubbling Fluidized Bed (BFB) Boiler

    - Provides 62% reduction in mill wide fossil fuel consumption
    - Supplies 45% of steam for mill
    - Utilizes a variety of non fossil fuels
    - Bark, wood waste
    - Green chips (pine plantation thinning)
    - Tire derived fuel (shredded discarded tires)
    - Sludge derived from recycling boxes / old corrugated containers (OCC)
    - Uses less than 10% fossil fuel for start-up, shutdown and stabilization

  • 2007, Upgrade BFB

    - Improves air system, fuel feed system and ash handling
    - Provides improved boiler efficiency
    - Reduces fossil fuel an additional 39% compared to the previous best in 2006

  • 2009, Upgrade Recovery Boiler Burner Management System

    - Improves boiler reliability
    - Provides 55% of the mill steam from black liquor (a tree by-product of producing pulp)
    - Uses less than 2% fossil fuel for start-up, shutdown and stabilization
    - Provides steam for the mill and recovers chemicals

  • 2010, Super Heater Replacement Project

    - Improves reliability
    - Initiate project in 2009 with 2010 Installation

Results

  • Fossil fuel, 78% reduction since 2003
  • Water, 14% reduction (9 ½ million gallons of water a day from 11 million gallons a day
  • Electricity, 40% from biomass
  • Sulfur dioxide (a major contributor to acid rain), 60% reduction since 2003
  • Steam reduction
  • Particulates emission (tiny solid particles), 38% reduction due to:
    - Better BFB air pollution controls
    - Ability to run the mill without the Power Boiler

Being a privately owned paper mill provides the opportunity to focus on investments for long-term growth and to aggressively pursue environmental sustainability improvements. This is truly a biomass driven paper mill since 2003, with less than 14% fossil fuel used to make steam.

Interstate Container Cambridge Named WMDT/Mountaire Farms Environmental Star of the Month for July

Interstate Resources News homepage: http://news.interstateresources.com

In a joint effort with Mountaire Farms, Interstate Container has developed a recyclable and compostable “GREENCOAT” box for use in packing and shipping poultry and other products, aimed at reducing waste and greenhouse gas emissions.

(Millsboro, DE) – ABC affiliated television station in Salisbury, MD, WMDT and Mountaire Farms are proud to name Interstate Container Cambridge, MD, as the recipient of the WMDT/Mountaire Farms Environmental Star of the Month Award for July. For over a decade the box industry has faced the challenge of finding a viable alternative to wax coated boxes.

Under mounting pressure from major metropolitan areas and retailers to develop an environmentally friendly option, Interstate Container of Cambridge, a subsidiary of Interstate Resources, did the improbable, meeting the challenge head on and developing their patent pending GREENCOAT box. This unique box maintains all the strengths of its wax coat counterpart and none of its weaknesses.

video

In comparison, the box size has been slightly smaller, allowing for a reduction in the amount of paper needed to produce the box, and the inner plastic bag and wax coating once used on all boxes was eliminated. These subtle, but highly effective changes make the biggest difference possible, the new GREENCOAT box is 100% recyclable and compostable, thus reducing the millions of tons of waste destined for landfills & greenhouse gas emissions once seen with wax coated boxes.

This new packaging has passed the ISO 16929 protocol for plastic disintegration in a pilot scale composting facility, which means it meets the government’s environmental standards. It is for this innovative excellence Interstate Container was chosen as an Environmental Star of the Month.

Mountaire Farms, a proud partner of Interstate Container, has fully integrated the GREENCOAT boxes into their production facilities for use in packing and shipping poultry product throughout the United States and abroad. It was through a joint effort with Interstate Container that the GREENCOAT prototype, and its state-of-the-art technology, was first developed and unveiled to the world.

Mountaire Farms is the first company to utilize the 100% recyclable containers, which are inline to replace all wax boxes used in the U.S. supply chain. This industry switch over as a whole will not only eliminate waste, but will also provide noticeable decreases in water and energy usage. And Interstate Container can proudly say they where the driving force behind this latest technological innovation, placing them at the forefront of the industry.

According to Pete Bugas, General Manager, Interstate Container,

“This a major step to permanently remove wax boxes throughout the supply chain in the United States. This box now provides the end-user with a recycling option; it also is certified compostable, which is yet another avenue to prevent boxes from being land-filled.”
Earlier this year the GREENCOAT boxes were first tested on Mountaire product destined for the New York City market, which runs through the Hunt’s Point Distribution facility in New York. Interstate Container, in partnership with Global Green USA and Mountaire, commenced the conversion of Mountaire’s New York City business to these FBA-certified recyclable boxes. This initial trial was implemented at Mountaire’s Lumber Bridge North Carolina facility, the largest poultry processing plant in the country.

By transitioning Mountaire’s business to GREENCOAT boxes, the New York City market alone will now be able to recycle over 6,000 tons of poultry boxes per year. If all of Mountaire’s boxes servicing New York City are recycled, greenhouses gases would be reduced by 21,000 mtCO2e per year, equivalent to removing 3,800 passenger cars off the road.

After witnessing these glowing results, it was an easy decision for Mountaire to formulate a plan to not only convert their existing modified atmosphere packaging to recyclable boxes, but also to convert their ice pack product to atmosphere packaging as well, in turn allowing for a complete transition of the entire product line to recyclable boxes. Full conversion of facilities in Lumber Bridge, NC, Selbyville, DE and Millsboro, DE has already been completed.
“Because we’re an agricultural company, we have an obligation to take care of the earth. In order to sustain our business, we need to have good soil, clean water, and clean air to grow our crops and raise our chickens. It is all part of our way of being.”- Larry Saywell, VP of Marketing, Mountaire Farms
The WMDT/Mountaire Environmental Star of the Month Award is designed to honor local individuals or groups for outstanding achievement in promoting environmentalism on Delmarva. Anyone contributing to the advancement, promotion, awareness and improvement of our Delmarva environment is eligible for this unique television and Mountaire tribute.
