Interstate Launches GREENCOAT® Website for Sustainable Packaging Buyers

Interstate Resources News homepage: http://news.interstateresources.com

GREENCOATâ website (www.greencoat.net) makes requesting information and samples of wax-alternative corrugated boxes easy for packaging buyers in the poultry, meat, seafood, fresh produce, floral, and landscaping industries.

Interstate Container has released a website for GREENCOATâ wax-free boxes, a corrugated packaging solution for companies in need of strong and sustainable moisture-resistant corrugated packaging. Interstate Container Cambridge and Interstate Container Columbia ship over 3.2 million wax-alternative boxes each month. The boxes are compostable and FBA-certified 100% recyclable and repulpable.

From the website, visitors can call or submit a quick form to request GREENCOATâ samples to run in side-by-side trials with their current packaging. The website also offers PDF downloads, links to upcoming trade shows and to social media channels.

About GREENCOATâ Wax-Replacement Boxes

GREENCOATâ boxes provide the same strength than traditional cascaded wax boxes and curtain coated wax boxes. They withstand high exposure to moisture, rough handling, long storage, transportation, and shifts from cold-to-hot environmental conditions. GREENCOATâ boxes are also easier to glue than waxed boxes.

Interstate Container controls 100% of GREENCOATâ’s manufacturing process; the company does not outsource the coating of paper to third parties, which increases cost effectiveness. Likewise, customers experience cost savings, when they no longer have to pay landfill disposal fees.

Interstate Container Cambridge invested 5 years of R&D to develop and successfully trial GREENCOATâ wax-alternative boxes with leading poultry processor, Mountaire Farms. GREENCOATâ has reduced an estimated 100,000 tons of greenhouse gases for Mountaire Farms, lowered costs and streamlined Mountaire Farm’s supply chain.

Award-Winning & Socially Conscious Corrugated Packaging

Interstate Container has received awards for GREENCOATâ and for its contributions to its local communities. Dorchester Chamber of Commerce named Interstate Container Cambridge 2011 Large Chamber Business of the Year for its good standing with obligations and active support of the community and chamber activities.

At the 11th Annual Sustainable Design Awards, Global Green, a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering global climate improvement, awarded 1st Pioneer Award to Interstate Container for its advancements with GREENCOATâ

Mountaire Farms and WMDT, ABC-affiliated television station in Salisbury, MD, named Interstate Container Cambridge as the recipient of the WMDT/Mountaire Farms Environmental Star of the Month Award for July 2010.

PACK EXPO Las Vegas 2011 Opens Doors to New Markets for GREENCOAT®

Interstate Resources News homepage: http://news.interstateresources.com

Interstate Container Cambridge representatives attended PACK EXPO 2011, international exhibition for packaging and processing machinery, components, materials, containers and converting machinery.

Interstate Container Cambridge representatives, Jeff Cormier, Sales and Marketing Manager, and Frank Biskach, Technical Service Representative, attended PACK EXPO Las Vegas 2011 to allocate new and innovative packaging machinery for customers. The international exhibition took place at Las Vegas Convention Center, in Las Vegas, USA, from 26-28 September 2011.

The corrugated packaging manufacturer looked at machines, such as baggers, stretch wrap machines, and robotics that would help customers reduce poultry plant labor. The show also provided representatives the opportunity to explore new ideas and services that Interstate Container Cambridge could offer customers, as well as meet with current and potential vendors.

ADCO, manufacturer of packaging machinery/systems and vendor to Interstate Container Cambridge, occupied a booth at the event and offered the corrugated packaging manufacturer the opportunity to set up a small GREENCOAT® display. Furthermore, ADCO exhibited a new tray-former machine running GREENCOAT® boxes that Interstate Container Cambridge had supplied.

The corrugated display demonstrated GREENCOAT®’s strength and durability with the eco-friendly corrugated box holding 5 inches of water without leaking. GREENCOAT® is an innovative recyclable, repulpable and compostable wax-replacement corrugated box for packing bulk poultry, meat, seafood, and fresh produce, as well as floral packaging.

The small display was well-received in an event setting unrelated to the usual target sectors. PACK EXPO Las Vegas 2011 provided Interstate Container Cambridge the opportunity to target new markets for GREENCOAT®, attracting prospects from all over the world interested in GREENCOAT® for packaging fertilizer, plants, paving stones, and produce.  Visitors were looking for a corrugated box that could withstand exposure to certain elements at big box retailers like Home Depot and Lowe’s.

Jeff Cormier, Interstate Container Cambridge Sales and Marketing Manager, explained,

“ADCO offered us the opportunity to put a small corrugated display in their booth as a thank you for buying their machine.  Ed Fish, our designer, created the display and sent it out to Las Vegas along with our standard GREENCOAT® flyers.  By noon on day 1 of the show (26 September 2011), we were called to the booth to replenish flyers and talk to several prospects that visited the stand.

Booth visitors were amazed by the fact that our box had 5 inches of standing water in it and was not leaking.  Because this was not a poultry show, like we are used to, the products the people wanted to pack were items like fertilizer, plants, paving stones, and produce.  Having a display at PACK EXPO was an unexpected success to get GREENCOAT® exposure in a non-poultry setting.”

PACK EXPO Las Vegas 2011 exhibition encompassed a show floor of 600,000 net square feet. The event brought together international professionals and exhibitors of innovative technology for 40 vertical markets, as well as providers of total system solutions including processing equipment, operations software, packaging machinery, converting machinery, materials and containers. Furthermore, attendees of the 3-day event learned about the latest advances in secure packaging, printing and graphics, and instrumentation. [1]

Outside-the-Wax Box Thinking: 'White Meat Goes Green’ with Mountaire Farms’ New Packaging Initiative

Interstate Resources News homepage: http://news.interstateresources.com

Interstate Container Cambridge highlighted in Meat & Poultry Magazine's April issue.
Source: Petrak, L. (April 2010). Meat & Poultry Magazine. meatpoultry@sosland.com

We’re all in this together. That’s a common refrain these days, particularly this time of year as Earth Day approaches and as the environmental movement gains traction. But besides sounding catchy, the phrase aptly describes the important differences even small changes among committed groups working in tandem can make to the well-being of the planet.
Take, for example, something as seemingly straightforward as the shipment of poultry products. A recent collaboration between packaging supplier Interstate Container Cambridge, poultry processor Mountaire Farms and non-profit organization Global Green USA centered on the conversion of traditional wax-coated boxes to recyclable boxes for wholesale transfer packaging.
That change, along with a shift in packaging methods from ice-packed boxes to modified atmosphere (MAP) packaging, has led to a substantial reduction in greenhouse gases – estimated at more than 100,000 tons – and, in the process, lower costs and greater efficiency for the processor and end-user.

This white-meat-goes-green initiative has been in the works for awhile.

“We committed to it about five years ago,” says Pete Bugas, National Poultry Manager for Arlington, Va.-based Interstate Container, noting that Interstate first discussed the concept of wax-alternative boxes in the early 2000s and tapped into the work of Global Green by 2005. “They provided the format of bringing in vendors and suppliers and pushed and prodded for the program to succeed,” he recalls.

“Above all and no matter what, at the end of the day the box has to hold up.”

Mountaire Farms, a poultry processor in Millsboro, Del., joined the effort in its early phase, according to Larry Saywell, vice president of marketing. “Interstate is our corrugated supplier and brought the concept to us several years ago, so we’ve been going down that path together,” he says. At first blush, the concept was intriguing to Mountaire Farms because of its longtime focus on stewardship.“Ultimately, that’s what we do – we spend our time trying to take care of the land.”

After numerous discussions and exhaustive planning, Interstate Container Cambridge and Mountaire Farms began pioneering recyclable MAP about a year ago through the nation’s largest food distribution center, Hunt’s Point in the Bronx, N.Y. The pilot program, which ended in September, was part of Global Green’s effort to achieve 100-percent recyclable wholesale transfer packaging at that facility.

We wanted to use New York City as a test for a recycling program with national potential focusing in the foodservice industry, ”explains Annie White, director of the Coalition for Resource Recovery for Global Green USA. She says Hunt’s Point is an ideal microcosm of what can be done in this segment of the food chain. “In New York, there are 200 tons of waste a day coming from a combination of retail and food service and 700 tons of that is paper.” The use of corrugated boxes was seen as a particular opportunity, she says.

Proving Ground

It was a good chance for Interstate container to test its recyclable boxes, according to Bugas. “Above all and no matter what, at the end of the day the box has to hold up. Plant conditions are extremely wet, the product is put in coolers and reefers and when it gets to New York, it sits on the dock in the middle of the summertime,” he points out.

For Mountaire Farms, the New York City distribution center was a major hub for its food service business and was deemed an ideal place and time to act on the company’s commitment to greener packaging. “New York is a tough market and there is a lot of trash that leaves Manhattan every day,” Saywell says.

The change at Hunt’s Point began on a pallet-by-pallet basis, Saywell says, but the trial swiftly gained speed based on its immediate success. After a month or so of test runs, the switch was made to entirely recyclable wax-alternative boxes from Interstate Container.

Beyond the tangible differences to the New York City market, the Hunt’s Point trial has had a more widespread effect. “Food from all over the world is shipped through Hunt’s Point. When we reach 100 percent there, it will show a step change, and that has been our interest,” White says
.

According to White, such a step-change actually could be a giant leap: 1.5 million tons of non recyclable wax-coated corrugated boxes are discarded in the U.S. each year. Replacing those boxes with corrugated recyclable boxes would have the same effect as removing 1 million passenger vehicles from the road, she points out. And the advantage wouldn’t only be for the Earth. According to Global Green’s estimates, U.S. grocers and restaurateurs would save up to $63million annually in disposal fees.

Extending the Green Line

Last year’s trial at Hunt’s Point went so smoothly that Mountaire Farms decided to extend the conversion company-wide. In the months since the pilot program ended, Mountaire Farms has converted the boxes and packaging methods at its main facility in Lumber Bridge. N.C. – the nation’s largest poultry plant – and is currently working on a change over its other plants in Delaware, according to Saywell.

During that short time frame Saywell reports that pivotal reductions have been achieved all around. “As we went to a drier packed product, we were also able to reduce the size of our boxes and ultimately use less water. That was another key piece of the equation for us,” he observes.

Wax replacement boxes for packing poultry & white meat

While Mountaire Farms moves toward recyclable packaging and greener packaging methods, it has tried to extend the message about the benefits of sustainability through its own chain. “We developed a kind of recyclable logo to put on all of our corrugated to make the customer aware that they don’t have to segregate the product anymore. And the customers have said they enjoy the change because it helps them, as well,” Saywell says.

“I think that the time has come because when a company can do something green and it makes business sense –that’s when it is a pretty easy decision
.”

At this point, with those throughout the food chain looking for ways to reduce costs, streamline distribution and pursue greener strategies, the decision to shift to recyclable wholesale MAP packaging may become a more popular one.

Saywell thinks it’s a proverbial no-brainer for all meat and poultry processors to jump on the recyclable box bandwagon. “Ultimately, it’s the right thing to do. It’s very hard to not do the right thing when you have the opportunity,” he notes.

White, meanwhile, says that beyond processors that sell to wholesale, the entire food chain can literally think outside the box when it comes to sustainable packaging materials and methods. “I think that the time has come because when a company can do something green and it makes business sense – that’s when it is a pretty easy decision,” she says.

Right now, the timing is especially ripe for fresh food suppliers like meat and poultry processors and produce companies and for restaurateurs that are in the midst of a major green movement. Seizing the perfect-storm opportunity, Global Green made an earnest plea to the industry earlier this year, calling on food packagers to convert to this newly achievable green standard.

From a packaging supplier perspective, Bugas says the Hunt’s Point trial has already generated a buzz in other parts of the country. “I know Global Green has great interest in replicating this model in other metropolitan places,” he reports, citing urban areas like Chicago that currently use a lot of wax boxes in the wholesale distribution market. Interstate has received positive feedback as well and is fielding inquiries from other meat and poultry and fresh food companies.

Finally, Bugas notes that an all in-this-together philosophy has, in fact, emerged through this one type of packaging conversion: “This has made our own employees highly conscious of what we do with our waste, from how we discard our soda bottles to how we handle paper waste. It’s a neat trickle-down effect.”
